Dans un texte sur son parcours, Judith Nelson écrit que ses œuvres en relief « ne sont pas la représentation d’une chose mais la chose elle-même ». À la fois objet et sujet, les œuvres expriment un respect profond de la nature tout en restant résolument mystérieuses. Elles échappent à toute interprétation fixe et donnent libre cours à l’imaginaire du spectateur. Lorsque nous regardons ces œuvres, avec leurs titres énigmatiques tels que Kake, Folate, Keel et Omnia, nous pouvons également ressentir le plaisir tactile de la manipulation et de l’assemblage des matériaux naturels. Des bandes de papier artisanal, peintes ou imprimées d’un pigment de terre rouge, sont plissées et organisées en couches pour créer des structures dentelées, auxquelles sont ajoutés des fragments de détritus.

About her relief works, Judith Nelson has written that they “are not a picture of a thing but the thing itself”. They are both object and subject, expressing a reverence of nature yet remaining resolutely mysterious, eluding any fixed interpretation and giving free rein to the viewer’s imagination. What can also be felt when contemplating these works – with such enigmatic titles as Kake, Folate, Keel and Omnia – is the pleasure of manipulating and assembling natural materials. Strips of handmade paper, painted or printed with red dirt pigment, are pleated and layered to create undulating or corrugated structures which are then overlaid with fragments of detritus.
