La Galerie Arnaud Lefebvre revient sur une longue tradition de découverte et d'archivage dans l'œuvre de l'artiste et écrivain nord-américain Hollis Frampton (1936-1984). Présentant une sélection de films, de photographies, de collages et de xérographies de Frampton, Hollis Frampton - Influence diffuse met en dialogue les œuvres de sept artistes qui partagent une relation avec Frampton et sa pratique. Les films, photographies, dessins et installations des contemporains Catherine Beaugrand, Bill Brand, Rosemarie Castoro, Nicolas Clair, Marion Faller, Robert Huot et Katy Martin nous invitent à réfléchir sur les aspects profondément personnels et radicalement conceptuels d'un réseau de pratiques qui coïncident avec celles de Frampton et restent d'actualité aujourd'hui.

Largement célébré comme une figure exceptionnelle du cinéma expérimental new-yorkais des années 1960 et 1970, Hollis Frampton entretient des relations avec un milieu diversifié d'artistes et de penseurs contemporains aux États-Unis et en Europe qui n'ont jusqu'à présent pas été suffisamment explorées. Les œuvres réunies à la Galerie Arnaud Lefebvre remettent en question les idées reçues sur Frampton et suggèrent un élargissement des cadres de référence existants. Elles dialoguent entre elles, laissent place à la découverte, à la discussion et à l'histoire orale, et abordent incidemment l'influence comme une catégorie historique beaucoup plus diffuse qu'on ne le suggère souvent. Comme l'a fait remarquer sa collègue artiste Katy Martin : « On peut dire que, comme Hollis, nous nous influencions tous les uns les autres. Nous mangions tous en quelque sorte à la même table, au même banquet d'idées et d'art. C'était une conversation passionnante à l'époque, nous étions tous enthousiastes et engagés. »

Hollis Frampton - Influence diffuse est organisée par Anne Breimaier et Arnaud Lefebvre en collaboration avec Katy Martin et s'accompagne d'une table ronde dans la galerie.

L’exposition coïncide avec le colloque Hollis Frampton: From Form to Idea to Form of Idea – Critical Thinking and Metahistory as Acts of Research-Creation organisé par l’INHA (Centre Pompidou hors les murs) et le Centre de l’Université de Chicago à Paris (Service Film, Centre Pompidou / CERILAC, Université Paris Cité / IRCAV, Sorbonne Nouvelle / LESA, Aix-Marseille Université / Université de Montréal / UQAM / York University), les 18, 19 et 20 février 2026, ainsi qu'un numéro spécial consacré à de nouveaux écrits sur Hollis Frampton, qui sera publié dans La Furia Umana.

Galerie Arnaud Lefebvre looks back on a longstanding tradition of discovery and archiving in the work of North American artist and writer Hollis Frampton (1936–1984). Featuring a selection of Frampton’s films, photography, collage and xerography, Hollis Frampton - Influence diffuse brings into dialogue works by seven artists who share a relationship with Frampton and his practice. Films, photography, drawings and installations by contemporaries Catherine Beaugrand, Bill Brand, Rosemarie Castoro, Nicolas Clair, Marion Faller, Robert Huot and Katy Martin invite us to reflect on the deeply personal and radically conceptual veins of a network of practices that coincide with Frampton’s and remain relevant to this day.

 

Widely celebrated as an exceptional figure in experimental film of New York in the 1960s and 70s, Hollis Frampton’s relationship with a diverse scene of contemporary artists and thinkers in the US and Europe has thus far been insufficiently explored. The works gathered at Galerie Arnaud Lefebvre challenge customary understandings of Frampton and suggest an expansion of previous frames of reference. They engage in dialogue with each other, hold space for discovery, discussion and oral history, and incidentally address influence as a category in history as much more diffuse than often suggested. As fellow artist Katy Martin remarked: “It’s fair to say that — as with Hollis — we were all influencing each other. We were all somehow eating at the same table, the same banquet of ideas and art. It was a heady conversation back then, all of us excited and engaged.”

 

Hollis Frampton - Influence diffuse is organized by Anne Breimaier and Arnaud Lefebvre in conversation with Katy Martin and is accompanied by a panel discussion in the gallery.
